Nationally recognised credentials (RBT-SL, RBA-SL)
Increased credibility with families, schools, and employers
Access to exclusive training and CPD/CEU opportunities
Listed in Sri Lanka’s official directory of certified professionals
Support from a growing, like-minded professional community

Who Can Apply?

BARB currently certifies professionals under two designations

Behaviour Therapist

(RBT-SL)

For professionals who work directly with clients under supervision.

You may qualify if you:

  • Hold a certificate (active or expired) from BACB, IBAO, QABA
  • Have 2+ years of hands-on experience
  • Complete an accredited training programme
  • Meet supervision and police clearance requirements

Behaviour Analyst

(RBA-SL)

For professionals who assess, design, and oversee interventions.

You may qualify if you:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in Behaviour Analysis or related field
  • Complete accredited ABA training and supervised practical hours
  • Pass a qualifying exam
  • Maintain certification through CPD
Limited Time Only

Grandparenting Pathway

During BARB’s initial rollout, experienced practitioners may be admitted via a review process. Apply early if you believe you qualify.

The Grandparenting Pathway has been introduced to recognise professionals who have contributed to the field of behaviour therapy but may not yet meet the full criteria for direct certification. This pathway is available for a limited period of four (4) years during BARB’s initial rollout.

Membership Progression

All applicants admitted via the Grandparenting Pathway will initially be granted Associate Membership.

Once you complete the 40-hour ABA course and obtain a recognized ABA credential, your status may be upgraded to Full Membership, following BARB’s review and approval process.

Important Notes

  • Supervision: Not mandatory during the Grandparenting period; however, mandatory supervision applies once the four-year phase concludes.
  • Deadline: After the four-year window closes, this pathway will no longer be available. Only professionals with active, recognised licenses will be eligible.

For Previously Certified Professionals

If you hold an expired ABA qualification (such as RBT, IBT, IBA, or BCBA) or have paused your professional practice, you can still apply through this pathway.

Upon approval, you’ll receive Associate Membership with BARB and can work toward Full Membership by completing the required training within the 4-year period.

Requirements for Re-Certification

  • 1
Sit for a basic ABA knowledge examination to refresh and validate your expertise
  • 2
Complete an Ethics and Professional Conduct exam
  • 3
Attend an interview to review your practical experience and professional background

For Experienced but Uncredentialed Practitioners

If you are currently working as a Behaviour Therapist, Special Needs Educator, or in a related discipline with substantial hands-on experience in behavioural interventions but without a formal ABA credential you may also apply through the Grandparenting Pathway.

What You'll Need to Do

  • Demonstrate relevant work experience and supporting documentation
  • Pass the basic ABA knowledge and ethics exams
  • Attend an interview with BARB’s review panel
  • Complete a 40-hour ABA training course within the four-year period
